We lay them on kitchen splashbacks, shower walls and floors, in sea green, terracotta or white, and in sizes from the classic square to the long slim strip. We plan the setting out and the joints carefully so the tiling stays clean at corners, niches and junctions.

Good tiling starts with the setting out: we decide where to begin so the tiles sit centred and the cuts fall where they show least, in corners, niches and where the tiles meet the worktop.

To clean it, water and a mild detergent are all you need. The grout lines are the most delicate part: clean them regularly, especially in the shower, to keep them in good condition.
