Encaustictiles.
From the late nineteenth century, encaustic tiles filled the flats of Barcelona and the whole Mediterranean with pattern. They are made from pressed cement and pigments, without firing, with a layer of colour that resists wear.
We use them on living room, kitchen and bathroom floors, as a rug within a seamless floor or covering the whole room. They pair naturally with wood, lime and microcement, and bring personality without the need for further decoration.
Patterned tiles
Patternunderfoot.
Encaustic tiles look their best on the floor: covering a whole living room, marking out the dining area within a plain floor, or giving character to a kitchen or bathroom.
One idea we love is to use them as a rug within a microcement floor or next to wood, to define areas without putting up walls.
Madewithout a kiln.
Unlike ceramic, encaustic tiles are never fired: they are pressed from cement and pigments and left to cure slowly. Their top layer of colour gives them that matt, velvety look.
There are geometric, floral and plain designs, and they can be combined to create borders and rugs. It is a way to bring the style of early twentieth century homes back into a renovation today.
Caring forthe pattern.
Because they are porous, encaustic tiles need a protective treatment after laying. That way they resist stains better and keep their colour.
To clean them, water and a neutral soap; best to avoid acidic or abrasive products. With use they take on a soft patina that is part of their charm.
